Music in Hungary

In other countries there are many kinds of music, for example, rock, hip-hop, pop, jazz, funky, blues,R&B. You can find these music types in Hungary, too.
There is another music genre, which is very special, and it’s called Hungarian Folk music.
In my opinion, it’s a really good thing that our country has such an unusual music style.
Many people don’t like it because folk music contains old traditional Hungarian songs and it has got a really different sounding than the ones today. Maybe that’s the reason why young people aren’t keen on listening to it, they may consider it embarrassing.

The men who perform folk music wear black trousers and white shirts and a hat. Women wear old traditional dresses with red tulips on it, and their hair is braided in two pigtails tied with red ribbons.
As for me it’s entertaining and I’m proud to be a Hungarian!

Hungarian traditions

Busójárás („Busó-walking")

It is an annual celebration of the people living in the town of Mohács held at the end of the Carnival season (Farsang), ending the day before Ash Wednesday. The celebration features Busós (people wearing traditional masks) and includes folk music, masquerading, parades and dancing. Busójárás lasts six days, usually during February. It starts on a Thursday, followed by the Kisfarsang (Little Farsang) carnival on Friday, with the biggest celebration, Farsang vasárnap (Farsang Sunday) on the seventh Sunday before Easter Sunday; the celebration then ends with Farsangtemetés (Burial of Farsang) on the following Tuesday.

International Workers' Day

Also known as Labor Day or May Day, is a celebration of laborers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labor movement and occurs every year on May 1.
In many countries a traditional European spring celebration and public holiday, May Day, also occurs on or around May 1. Therefore, while May 1 is a national public holiday in many countries, in only some of those countries is it celebrated specifically as Labor Day or International Workers' Day.

Május fa (May tree, Maypole)

A maypole is a tall wooden pole erected as a part of various European folk festivals, around which a maypole dance often takes place.
The festival is on May Day , although in some countries it is instead erected at Midsummer. In some cases the maypole is a permanent feature that is only utilised during the festival, although in other cases it is erected specifically for the purpose before being taken down again.

Easter

Easter or Resurrection Sunday is a festival and holiday celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred three days after his crucifixion by Romans at Calvary.
The week before Easter is called Holy Week, and it contains the days of the Easter Triduum, including Maundy Thursday (also known as Holy Thursday), commemorating the Last Supper and its preceding foot washing, as well as Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus.
Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The date of Easter therefore varies from 22 March to 25 April inclusive.

Hungarian dishes

Food in Hungary is tasty, but not very healthy, because we eat a lot of greasy food. We don’t eat enough fresh vegetables. The best known Hungarian dish is goulash.

We make a lot of dishes with paprika in it, for example goulash, stews, chicken paprika, or Hungarian fish soup. A lot of dishes have sour cream on top. We use cottage cheese with many different dishes, for example: dumplings, strudels, pies or pasta topped with cottage cheese and sour cream. We also use poppy seeds to make sweet dishes, for example: poppy seeds pancakes with hot berry sauce.

We take great pride in fish dishes, the Hungarian fish soup is a substantial meal in itself.

Hungary is a soup-eating nation. A complete three-course meal always starts with a soup. Soup is usually followed by some kind of meat dish with potato, pasta or ice garnishing. Pickles or salad are made from seasonal vegetables accompany meat dishes.Pörkölts and paprikás are the most popular meat dishes. Pörkölt is a ragout made from pork, beef or mutton or chicken with onions and Hungarian paprika powder as the main spice. If you have a sweet tooth you do not want to miss luscious Hungarian cakes, scrumptious pastries. Must-try desserts include: Dobos Cake, Krémes, Strudels, Rigó Jancsi, Rákóczi Túrós, Kürtős kalács, Túró Rudi.

I
lay the table as I sometimes do for a Sunday lunch. I spread a nice white cloth over the dining table. I put out the dinner plates first, then the soup plates. The knife and spoon go on the right-handside, the napkin and the fork on the left. I put the side plates, goblets, glasses and dessertspoons in front of the plates. Finally I try not to forget about the saltcellar, the pepperpot and the toothpicks either.
